Our Review of Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT)

At Plan Your Trips, we have analyzed hundreds of airports worldwide and reviewed passenger feedback from platforms such as SKYTRAX, Google Reviews and travel forums to better understand the real traveler experience at Tokyo Narita Airport (NRT). Our goal is to provide honest, concise and practical information that helps passengers know what to expect before flying through one of Asia’s busiest international airports.

Narita Airport consistently receives some of the best reviews among major international airports. Travelers frequently praise the airport’s exceptional cleanliness, organization, efficiency and customer service. Many reviews highlight the politeness of airport staff, the clear signage in English and the calm atmosphere despite the airport’s size. The quality of restaurants, Japanese food options and airport shopping is also mentioned very positively.

Another major strength repeatedly mentioned by passengers is how easy Narita Airport is to navigate compared to many other large Asian hubs. Long-haul travelers and transit passengers especially appreciate the lounges, capsule hotels, showers and overall comfort during layovers. SKYTRAX has repeatedly awarded Narita its prestigious 5-Star Airport rating and ranked it among the world’s best airports.

The most common complaints are related to the airport’s distance from central Tokyo, expensive taxi fares and sometimes long immigration queues during peak international arrival periods. Some low-cost travelers also mention that Terminal 3 offers fewer premium facilities and involves longer walking distances.

Final Rating: 8.9 / 10

Narita Airport delivers one of the best airport experiences in the world thanks to its outstanding cleanliness, efficiency, food quality and professionalism. While its distance from Tokyo prevents it from being perfect, travelers who prepare transport in advance usually enjoy an exceptionally smooth and comfortable experience.

Mini-Guide of the Airport (2' Guide)

Tokyo Narita International Airport (NRT) is one of Japan’s main international gateways and one of the busiest airports in Asia. Located around 60 km east of central Tokyo, Narita handles the majority of the country’s long-haul international traffic and connects Japan with destinations across Europe, North America, Oceania and the rest of Asia.

The airport has three terminals. Terminal 1 is mainly used by Star Alliance and SkyTeam airlines and offers the most premium experience, with excellent lounges, restaurants and shopping areas. Terminal 2 serves several international airlines including oneworld members, while Terminal 3 is dedicated mostly to low-cost carriers such as Jetstar and Peach Aviation.

One of the most important things travelers should know is that Narita Airport is much farther from Tokyo than many expect. The fastest train services, such as the Narita Express and the Keisei Skyliner, connect the airport with central Tokyo in approximately 40 to 60 minutes, although total journey times are often closer to 90 minutes depending on the final destination. Airport buses, taxis and private transfers are also available, but taxis can be very expensive.

Narita Airport is widely recognized for its cleanliness, organization and efficiency. The airport consistently receives excellent reviews from travelers thanks to its clear signage, polite staff and calm atmosphere. English information is available throughout the terminals, making it relatively easy for international visitors to navigate.

Passengers will find a wide range of services and facilities including free Wi-Fi, luggage storage, currency exchange, showers, capsule hotels, airport lounges, observation decks and numerous restaurants serving Japanese and international cuisine. Narita is especially famous for its high-quality food options, with ramen, sushi and traditional Japanese meals being particularly popular among travelers.

For international departures, arriving at least three hours before flight time is recommended due to the airport’s size and immigration procedures. Travelers with long layovers will also appreciate the airport’s comfortable facilities and excellent transport connections.

Overall, Narita Airport offers one of the best airport experiences in Asia and is considered an efficient, clean and traveler-friendly gateway to Japan.

How we calculate On Time Performance

On various pages of our website, you will encounter a metric widely utilized in aviation and other forms of transportation known as OTP (On Time Performance). We believe that providing this metric assists passengers in planning their trips and exploring alternatives before purchasing their flight tickets.

We calculate the On Time Performance for all flights and airlines, when we have enough data to do so. In certain instances, it may not be feasible to accurately compute the On-Time Performance for a specific flight or airline due to inadequate or non-representative data, which could result in misleading conclusions.

Our calculation of On Time Performance and delay information solely relies on arrival times. This approach is chosen over calculating departure delays, as we consider arrival punctuality to be of primary concern to passengers.

The On Time Performance displayed on our website is calculated as follows:

  • On Time: Flights that arrive within 15 minutes of their scheduled arrival time, or earlier. In the absence of data for a specific flight, we assume the flight arrives on time, to avoid penalizing airlines for data unavailability.
  • Moderate Delay: Flights that arrive with a delay of 15 to 30 minutes.
  • Significant Delay: Flights that arrive with a delay of 30 to 60 minutes.
  • Major Delay: Flights that arrive with a delay exceeding 60 minutes.
  • Average Delay: The average delay is calculated by considering flights that arrive early as having a delay of 0 minutes. Early arrivals do not contribute to reducing the average delay calculation
